| Troop 197's annual Merit Badge University program is in it's 4th year. Each year our Troop MBU, with the help of our charter organization, Fellowship United Methodist has grown. This year is no exception and it will be the first year we are offering our program to other Troops. It is designed for us to have an indoor activity in February and participate with our charter organization on Scout Sunday. Scouts from any troop in our district (Trail of Tears) are welcome to come and participate.
MBU is very much like a day in school. All courses are taught by registered adult counselors; most of whom are true experts in their chosen fields. Classes are highly structured and class sizes are limited to insure quality instruction. Advance registration is required. Classes begin and end on schedule and boys are not permitted to wander between classes or roam the halls.
Many of the merit badges offered at MBU can be completed start-to-finish that day; others require varying amounts of advance preparation. Scouts who take classes without "doing their homework" in advance, will be awarded credit only for those parts of the badge that are completed.
All merit badge classes last 4 hours, so most scouts are able to work on 2 merit badges at MBU -- one in the morning and one during the afternoon.
A complete Registration Packet, including a full course list, will be posted to this web page and be available for downloading once all counselors are confirmed; typically in early to mid-November. Until then, an informational flyer (see hyperlink below) provides general details about the program, including information for adults interested in signing up to participate as a counselor.
